DTA (Digital Transport Adapters) FAQs

  • What change is MetroCast making to its services?

MetroCast is converting its Expanded Basic lineup to an all-digital format. This will dramatically enhance the quality of your services and give you more channels, plus allow us to offer advanced services such as Digital Phone and Video On Demand. Our goal is to make this transition very simple and extremely customer friendly. This is not to be confused with the Federally-mandated Digital Broadcast Transition (DTV) completed on June 12, 2009.

  • Why is MetroCast doing this?

MetroCast continually strives to deliver the best products for our customers, and by converting cable channels from analog to digital, we are able to utilize our bandwidth more efficiently to deliver improved products to our customers, including faster internet speeds and more HDTV channels. In addition, digital channels have better picture and sound quality than analog channels.

  • What do I need to do to take advantage of these improved services?

For each television in your home on which you would like to view Expanded Basic service, you will need either a Digital Converter, like the ones we currently offer, or a Digital Transport Adapter (DTA), a new piece of equipment that we will be distributing in the coming weeks.

  • What is the difference between and DTA and a Digital Converter?

The size of a DTA is about 4 x 5 inches. It will allow you to continue to view Expanded Basic channels once the MetroCast system upgrade is complete.  DTAs will not provide any interactive or advanced services such as Video On Demand (VOD), interactive program guides or High Definition Television (HDTV).

Digital Converters are the traditional "cable boxes" with which you are familiar. These converters allow you to view premium channels, utilize the interactive program guide and to access VOD.  Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) are a type of Digital Converter that allows you to pause, record, rewind, and instantly replay live television.

  • How will I know when to connect my DTA's?

MetroCast will provide you with information regarding timing. We will be reaching out to our customers with letters, home visits, and phone calls.  A MetroCast representative will visit your home to connect your DTA(s) and answer any questions you may have.

  • What new services will be available to me when the upgrade is complete?

Our newest product, MetroCast Digital Phone, will allow you to keep your current phone number and get unlimited local and US long distance calling. MetroCast Video On Demand gives you instant access to your favorite TV series, or choose from our extensive library of FREE cable programming anytime.  You will receive more HD channels, and Starz and Canales Espanoles premium packages will be available.

  • What if I do nothing?

Any television connected directly to MetroCast service without a digital device will lose access to all channels other than those included on MetroCast's Basic Service.  Visit www.metrocast.com/upgrades to ensure that you will not lose your favorite channels and the proper equipment gets into your home.

  • How will this impact my Basic Service?

MetroCast's conversaion of its Expanded Basic lineup to an all-digital format will not affect customers who have only Basic service.  MetroCast will continue to deliver these channels in an analog format so that you will not need a DTA or Digital Converter to view these channels on your television.

  • How do I benefit from the MetroCast system upgrade?

To provide better services for our customers MetroCast is continuously investing in new technology that will deliver new products and services to you.  The new digital signal will have a sharper picture and better sound quality.  Plus, you'll enjoy the variety of dozens of new channels.  Customers with an HDTV and HD converter will benefit as we launch more HD channels.  In addition, MetroCast will have the flexibility to launch new services such as MetroCast On Demand and Digital Phone and faster internet speeds.

  • Will I always need a DTA?

Once the upgrade is complete and you receive your new enhanced channel lineup, a digital device such as the DTA or a MetroCast digital converter must be connected at all times in order to receive Expanded Basic channels.
